Build Your Own SS Electric Brewery/Mashing System

High Gravity’s All Electric Stainless Steel Mashing/Brewery System
This configuration utilizes a Blichmann Boilermaker kettle with a heavy duty false bottom as the Mashtun, and 62 qt Bayou Classic kettle for the Hot Liquor Tank to build an all-stainless brewing system.
The electric heating element in the hot liquor tank can raise the temperature of a full 15 gallons of water by 160 degrees in 1 hour. So if you start with cold water at 50 degrees you can start mashing in about 40 minutes.
This HERMS system includes a heat exchanger in the HLT, a March 809 PS pump to transfer from HLT to MT and recirculate the wort in the mash tun, and a pair of Blichmann Brewmometers. Make your brewery All-Electric by adding an electric brewpot. Brew indoors anytime with valves and switches instead of labor. No more gas!
The Base System includes everything you need to brew up to 10 gallons of beer and includes the following items:
1 62 qt SS configured as the Hot Liquor Tank
1 15 Gal Blichmann Boilermaker as the Mash Tun
1 Blichmann Mash Screen for 15 Gal Boilermaker
1 March Pump w/ Polysulphone Head
2 Blichmann BrewMometer Thermometers
1 EBC Module
5 Quick Connector 1/2" MPT
3 Quick Connector Barbed
2 Quick Connector Barbed Elbow
1 Input manifold (Tee)
2 1/2" Ball-Valves
1 Copper Heat Exchanger (25 ft. x 3/8in)
10 ft of 1/2" Braided Hose (ft.)
2 Sets of SS Hose Clamps (4 per Set)
1 Heating Element w/ cord and plug
With the basic setup you control the system manually by monitoring temperatures and controlling the heat and pump as needed with the EBC.
The system can be automated by adding Ranco controllers to automatically control the heating element in the hot liquor tank, and/or maintain mash tun temperature by controlling the pump based on the settings that you input. One controller is needed for each vessel.
The system can be further enhanced by adding an electric Brewpot and/or a plate chiller. You can chose between the Shirron Plate Chiller or Blichmann Engineering’s Therminator.
More information on the Electric Brewery Module is listed below:
Electric Brewery Control Module
Incorporates a 30A/220V relay to control heating element.
Provides switching for pump and heating functions.
Provides quick disconnects for all electrical connections.
Control of pump and heating can be performed manually with switches, or automatically with optional temperature controllers.
Controller configured for manual control.
Controller configured for thermostatic control using Ranco controller.
Heating elements plug into receptacle on the back-side of the controller. Either the hot liquor tank or brew kettle plug into the receptacle and are controlled by the Heat switch, or optional temperature controller.
220V, 30A service is required. A receptacle that looks just like the one pictured above is needed to power the system. We installed one in the cabinet next to our stove.
We have brewed with this system for four years. We love being able to brew anytime - in the house, and consistantly produce award winning brews. Our beers are extremely clear due to the incredible hot break from the vigorous boil. A 3500W heating element in the kettle provides the right amount of energy to boil 13 gallons down to a net 10 gallons in an hour.
As with any gas fired system, large volumes of boiling hot liquid are inherently dangerous, and extreme care is recommended. Adding high-energy electricity to the equation increases the potential of danger. The heating elements will not withstand dry firing, and must always be completely immersed when energized. Careless operation can result in serious injury or death.
This equipment is sold as an experimental kit, to be assembled by the user. Assembly is straight-forward, and takes just 30 minutes or so.
High Gravity assumes no responsibility for any damages caused by operation of this system.
